For the latest instalment in our ‘60-seconds with’ series, we asked our Fire Safety Remediation Coordinator, Nicki Thacker, a few questions.

What does the role of Fire Safety Remediation Coordinator involve?

Our job is to assist in the process of making all the buildings in our portfolio safe where they currently have combustible materials on their external wall systems. As a co-ordinator, we help support our managers in the day to day facade projects and carry out admin duties such as uploading information to the Building Safety Fund portals. We spend lots of time responding to residents, liaising with client’s, attending meetings, and providing information. It is our role to make sure our residents feel supported and to ensure the projects run smoothly.

What do you like most about your job?

I love speaking with our clients and residents. Knowing the huge impact that our role has on our residents makes me proud to work within my team. My manager and my team are the things I am most grateful for, as we have a really close working relationship - they undeniably help in making my job enjoyable.

What challenges do you face in your role?

It is a really challenging role and the projects can be very complex. There is lots of co-ordination involved and you need to be extremely organised and focused. It is challenging working on these projects and we have to remember that these are people's homes. The remediation process and funding applications can be very frustrating for the residents who just want their apartments to be safe.

What made you pursue this career?

My family all come from a construction background and I grew up on building sites with my Dad so have always taken a keen interest in construction and Health & Safety.  Unfortunately, my sister had a house fire, so when the opportunity arose to work in Fire Safety, I was really keen to join the team.

What are you most proud of?

I used to be an Event Manager and promote my own events in London. Watching crowds of hundreds of people coming to an event I organised had always been a dream and having that come to life was amazing. I worked with some fantastic DJ’s and made some amazing memories.

Within my current role, I am most proud of the confidence that I have gained and how far I have grown as a person. I am proud of the buildings that we have remediated to date, knowing that we have helped make our residents homes safe.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I have two young children, a husband and two dogs so most of my time is spent with them. I love spending time with my friends and family especially my sister as we have a close bond and like to do things together. On a weekend I love nothing more than just snuggling up and watching films, which does involve lots of Disney! We are trying to educate our children into the wonderful world of 80’s classic films, but they are not that interested, yet!
